However, even though we see countless MMA gyms popping up, the small struggling traditional martial arts have been going through a drought. But it needn't be that way, nor do I think it will be forever.

When it comes to grappling, we always hear the same argument; which is better Judo or BJJ?
While Judo is certainly the most well know grappling sport along with wrestling, people tend to forget it has a Russian Cousin which is considered one of the most devastating fighting arts ever created. That sport is, of course, Russian Sambo.
MMA is a tough sport, possibly the closest there is to Gladiator combat.
Once that cage door is locked shut, it is a case you will not leave unless you are the winner or loser. The latter might result in an injury, a knockout or being put to sleep.
When faced with this prospect the legs start to go like jelly, our hearts race and we suddenly feel light headed. This is fear messing with you.
There is a saying in boxing, 'that guy is world class in the gym'.
Although a very cruel saying, what it implies is that the fighter is simply brilliant when they are in the familiar, comfortable surroundings of the gym but they fall apart on fight day.
I have seen the same happen in BJJ, Judo and many other combat sports. So what causes it?
Without a doubt, some knowledge is better than none, but the delusion that a 2-hour course will give anyone the skills to defeat a determined attacker is pure fantasy. That is not to say it will not help them or is of benefit. But we want our daughters to have skills that last a lifetime and that only comes with regular practice.
